On Big Rock Candy Mountain your family will collect abundant crystals of colourful fluorite, barite, and quartz, while enjoying the wildflowers and mountain scenery. Keep all the treasures you find.

Our sparkling quartz crystals, gemmy green & purple fluorite and famous barites have been waiting 45 million years for your visit.

   
2007 Safari Tours

 

You will travel in your own vehicle for 30 kms.

ADVANCE RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED AS TOURS ARE LIMITED TO THE NUMBERS OF VISITORS EACH DAY.

Tour times: 9:00am - 1:00 pm

Tours are limited to 30 persons maximum and 8 persons minimum required per tour. Each tour is approximately 4 hours. (Allow 5 hours to include travel time)

Your guide will help you explore the rich history of the Rock Candy Mine. Join us for an exciting look into the past with abundant crystal souvenirs you collect yourself.

We provide access, naturalist/guide, instructions, and hammers. Rock Candy Mine does not allow unescorted visitors.

What to bring:

Closed-toe footwear mandatory.
Lunch and water.
A backpack to carry your crystals. Plastic bags do not work, as rocks are sharp!
Safety glasses (recommended for everyone, required for kids); or use our "one-size-fits-all" used goggles.
Cameras are welcome.

Itinerary:

9:00 am - Check in & purchase tickets at the Grand Forks Visitor Centre (525 Central Avenue). Travel West on Hwy # 3 to North Fork Road junction (just past OK Tire), turn right and travel 16 kms to the junction of Brown Creek Road. ( See pull in for mail boxes on left side). This next 6 kms is a winding paved road. After a short straight stretch of road turn right at 12190 Brown Creek Road EAST where you see the sign Brown Creek Hall. Travel a short distance to Brown Creek Hall parking lot on the right.

10:00 am Sharp- Your guide will meet you at Brown Creek Hall parking lot and escort you to the collecting site.

1:00 pm - Descend Rock Candy Mountain and retrace your trip back to North Fork & Brown Creek Road junction. Turn Left here, go over the one-lane wooden bridge, then bear right to follow the scenic Granby Road & stop to view the mounds of Black Gold (slag pile) Continue south to Hwy # 3 junction & the Omega II Restaurant where you can enjoy borscht & refreshments.

Access:

1 km hike, mostly on old forest road, ending with 150 meter steep ascent on dirt/rock trail. There are outhouses available at the site.

Payment:

Tickets are picked up prior to the tour at the Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce Visitor Info Center located at 525 Central Avenue. Cash, cheque, debit or Amex, Mastercard, or Visa.

Guided Safair Tours

Pricing assumes at least 8 people will be on tour. If fewer than 8 book, a premium will be charged to bring the group price to $160.

Adults (15+) $ 24.00 + GST
Youth (6-14) $18.00 + GST
Child (0-5) Free **Tour involves hiking, may not suitable for toddlers. Children must be able to walk on steep trail portion.**

*Land and Water British Columbia Inc. (LWB C) Crown land access fee $1.06 per person is applicable to all visitors (including children under 5 and seniors over 75).

Additional Tours

Individual Tours (Minimum 8) $160. + GST

Group Tours ideal for schools, private organizations or events. $300.00 for up to 25 people, includes GST & LWBC Fee.

MOON LIGHT ROCKS

Moonlight Rocks: our newest tour! In the cool of the evening, join us for a magical exploration of rocks which glow in the dark! We start with an hour of collecting pretty fluorite specimens in daylight, then you descend to our creekside meadow camfire to roast an edible treat while waiting for darkness. Once dark, we'll take a short, easy walk to an area where the 1920's miners left behind piles of fluorescent fluorite pieces. Once illuminated with our 'black lights', its like standing on a pile of glowing blue diamonds! Fill your pockets with cool specimens!

Special Tours can also be arranged.

Dates: Trips are held Wednesday and Saturday evenings in June thru September 15th . Meeting time changes with the season. Moonlight trips for 2008 start June 6. Book through Grand Forks Visitor Info: 250 442 2833. Minimum 8 persons per tour required.
